Chapter 10 - Formation damage in gas injection methods
Abstract
This chapter provides an understanding of the natural and induced formation damages (FDs) during and after gas injection into oil reservoirs for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) purposes. Several experimental and theoretical investigations, a limited number of pilot practices, and some cases of field applications have shown that the injection of gas can considerably increase oil recovery, at both the microscopic and macroscopic levels. However, the economic production of oil reservoirs after implementing EOR methods has been challenged by damages and resulting reservoir production losses. Therefore, in this chapter, attempts were made to present a brief description about dominant mechanisms of FD while applying gas-based EOR techniques in oil reservoirs. Furthermore, an explanation of techniques to mitigate FDs during EOR approaches are presented.
