A case study of wave motion above a jet stream flow system observed by an instrumented balloon
Abstract
An analysis is presented of the data obtained from an instrumentedballoon rising through a jet stream. Emphasis is placed on the determination of the vertical atmospheric velocity. The analysis of the temperature and velocity perturbations shows evidence of a wave structure propagating upward. An estimation of the vertical flux of horizontal momentum is given. These preliminary results show clearly the ability of our helisonde to measure wave motions with a vertical velocity as low as 0.1 m s-’. The method allows a direct measurement of wave propagationinthe stratosphere.
