Abstract : Peatlands are wetland characterized by organic matter accumulation caused by: a positive water balance of the environment, a net production higher than organic matter decomposition, the high water holding capacity, peat being an organic material that contains over than 90% water and intrinsic porosity can make a high storage capacity of water retention. To better understand the water function of these peat environments, several peat samples were collected from four peat sites in France. The results show that the volumetric water contents θ (h) at the different potential values (h) are variable within the same site and between different sites as a function of depth. This variation in water content can be explained first by the degree of decomposition, where the peat at depth is more decomposed and more compact than at the surface. This difference in peat decomposition led to higher bulk density values at depth. The morphological characteristics of the peat (its compressibility, its degree of decomposition) explain the variation of the hydraulic conductivity K (h), higher in surface than in depth.
