Polarimetric Analysis and Imaging Applied to Field Measurements of the WISDOM RADAR in Preparation of the 2020 ExoMars Mission

Résumé

The Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) "Water Ice Subsurface Deposition on Mars" (WISDOM) is part of the Roscosmos-ESA ExoMars Rover payload scheduled for 2020. It will be one of the first GPR operating on a planetary rover and the first fully polarimetric radar tasked at probing the subsurface of Mars. WISDOM is designed to achieve centimetric resolution and a sounding depth of 3m in Martian soil operating at frequencies between 500 MHz and 3GHz. The primary scientific objective is the characterization of the material distribution within these first few meters of the subsurface as a contribution to the search for evidence of past life. It will measure the geological structure, electromagnetic nature, and hydrological state of the shallow subsurface at an unprecedented resolution and, due to the fully polarimetric measurements, amount of information. A "real time" subsurface analysis will support the drill operations by identifying locations of high scientific interest and low risk. In addition to the typical GPR processing schemes (filtering and image formation, e.g. f-k migration), the fully polarimetric WISDOM measurements allow the use of tools for polarimetric SAR data processing, such as the entropy-alpha decomposition. These methods are the basis for the classification of the reconstructed images of the subsurface with regard to the main scattering mechanisms of geological features. In order to validate the processing and classification algorithms, especially with regard to the polarimetric analysis and image formation, WISDOM measurements were performed and analyzed at a variety of test sites.
