Abstract

New biostratigraphical records have been identified from two formations of the High Atlas of Marrakech: the Anrar Conglomerate Formation in the Ourika Valley and the Oukaïmeden Sandstone Formation in Aït Mizane Valley, attributed respectively to Permian and Triassic. The present study focuses on new palynostratigraphic and conchostracan data within these two formations. The Anrar Conglomerate Formation was initially attributed to a possible early Permian age, by Van Houten (1977), based on a radiometric dating from spilites interstratified within this succession. Recently, the samples collected in argillaceous layers, rich in microspore assemblages, yielded a Cisuralian (i.e. early Permian) age, hence confirming the dating of Van Houten. Based on palynological data, the lower part (Biron & Courtinat, 1982) and the upper part (Cousminer & Manspeizer, 1976) of the Oukaïmeden Sandstone Formation were both attributed to the middle Carnian. Our results reveal an early Carnian age for the palynological association of the lower part of this formation. In the same levels, the first result obtained from the conchostracan association suggest a Ladinian-early Carnian age according to the current knowledge on the conchostracan from the Germanic and China basins (pers. com. Dr. Chu Daoliang, University of Wuhan, China). In conclusion, our results confirm an early Permian age for the Anrar Conglomerate Formation and establish, for the first time a Ladinian-early Carnian age for the base of the Oukaïmeden Sandstone Formation. …
