La structure de la chaîne hercynienne de la meseta ibérique : Histoire structurale du Golfe de Gascogne (Tome 1)

Abstract : The major features concerning stratigraphy, tectonics, metamorphism and granitic magmatism of the iberian va- riscan (hercynian) belt are exposed in order to compare the neighbouring european segments, particulary those situated at the northern part of the Biscay Bay. Striking similarities exist between the north-western part of the iberian Peninsula (Galicia) and the french massif Armoricain, namely when regarding the repartition and the petrological caracters of the metamorphic belts and the various hercynian granites. This suggests that the Galicia and the massif Armoricain belonged to the same contiguous orogen and that the south armorican and north iberian continental shelves were fitting at least at the end of the Hercynian. The authors discuss briefly the openning process of the Biscay Bay; they propose it is neither a simple rotation nor a translation, but the combination of these two mechanisms (first : sinistrial translation along a curviplanar transcurrent and/or transform fault; then, low-angle anticlockwise rotations during the Mesozoic and the Cenozoic). At the continental drift-scale, the consequences of these hypothesis are envisaged regarding the outline of the variscan belt in Europe and North Africa and its relations with the rest of the intrapaleozoic peri-Atlantic belts. For the authors, the Caledonian/ Appalachian orogens and the Hercynian are two independent systems but possibly related in space and time in the area between the western Africa and the south-eastern part of North America*
