Subauroral magnetic activity during magnetic quiet periods as described using 15-minutes alpha magnetic index

Résumé

The 15-minutes alpha magnetic indices are new proxies based on a dense network of magnetic observatories at sub-auroral latitudes in both hemispheres. Their novel derivation scheme aims at describing the geomagnetic activity with a high spatial and temporal resolution, and also at characterizing sub-auroral magnetic activity during magnetic quiet periods with an unprecedented resolution. We took advantage of these characteristics to show how they help to discriminate magnetically quiet and very quiet periods. Some comparisons with other geomagnetic indices are presented.
