Seismic vulnerability of the bridges and overpasses along critical roads and mobility disruption within the Metropolitan District of Quito (Ecuador)

Abstract : This paper provides the reader with a reflection about the mobility disruptions that are likely to occur within the Metropolitan District of Quito as a result of a road serviceability loss due to the damage that could be experienced by the elevated road structures, should an earthquake happen. This paper briefly presents the methodology we developed to pinpoint the urban critical roads, of which the closure is likely to be highly detrimental to the traffic and to the functioning of the whole district, and on which the stakeholders' attention should be prioritised. Secondly, it presents a diagnosis of the seismic damage probability for evey elevated road structures located along the urban critical roads. This analysis was carried out in partnership with the National Polytechnic High School of Ecuador. Some scenarios were elaborated and allowed forecasting the mobility disruptions, which are to be expected within the capital town of Ecuador in case of a very severe earthquake (PGA = 0.40g). The paper is a result of a study about urban risks carried out within the framework of the "Information System and Risks in the Metropolitan District of Quito" Programme by the Development Research French Institute (IRD) jointly with the Municipality of Quito.
