The vertical and horizontal scales are arbitrary. It is often assumed that the crust of Vesta is layered (e.g., Takeda, 1979) Following this view, the upper part is composed of various types of eucrites and covers a thick layer of diogenites which is exposed on the floor of the deepest impact craters (A) Our data demonstrate that the parental melts of diogenites have been contaminated by crustal partial melts and such a contamination implies that they have intruded the eucritic crust (B). Thus, exposures of diogenites are probably not limited to the largest impact craters, but could be found in less deep craters. Lavas associated with the diogenitic magmatism could have been locally erupted. eucrites: contamination of main group eucritic magmas by crustal partial melts, Geochim. Cosmochim.
