Radiative transfer of overlapping lines. Application in the cases of the upper atmosphere of Jupiter and Saturn and in the case of extrasolar giant planets

Résumé

Since several years, the radiative transfert studies of overlapping lines have been strongly developped. In the case of giant planets, these studies concern the overlapping of H2 Lyman and Werner system and the H Lyman series. We have shown that those effects modify strongly the intensity and shape of the dayglow lines. Through this method it is possible to get information on the H2 thermodynamical state by measuring the H Lyman lines. This have been applied on the jovian and saturnian cases. We have shown that in the jovian case the vibrational temperatures are 1.4 greater than the kinetic ones in the upper atmosphere. Recently those simulations have been extended to "hot jupiters" such as HD209458b and it has been shown that it is possible to detect H2 by using these effects in the FUV/EUV domain.
